Sonar Cosmia is an ongoing practice of astral sonification, an alternative way to perceive outer space. An immersive method of data visualisation, using audio signals to display cosmic values to create a simulated micro environment.
The project is focusing on natal astrology, a pseudoscience, where the exact positions of the planets of the solar system in an individual’s exact date, time, and birth location shapes their personality and life path. The zodiac data of one’s individual birth chart is translated into sounds signals. It is based in the planets frequency of the Sun☉, Moon☾, Mercury☿, Venus♀, Mars♂, Jupiter♃, Saturn♄, Uranus⛢ and Neptune♆,using the Cosmic Octave formula(1). The planets orbit duration determines the BPM.The zodiac signs Aries♈︎, Taurus♉︎, Gemini♊︎, Cancer♋︎ , Leo♌︎, Virgo♍︎, Libra♎︎, Scorpio♏︎, Sagittarius♐︎, Capricorn♑︎, Aquarius♒︎ and Pieces♓︎ that are reworked and transposed into a circle of fifths, a music scale that determine the relationship between 12 different pitches. These tonal frequencies are turned into oscillators. Based on an individual birth chart configuration, an additive synth is made with each planet frequency + their personal sign in the retrospective planet, creating a total of 9 different oscillator for each person. The birth location’s latitude determines the intensity of the frequency of the Sun and Moon. And the longitude determines the phase shift of the oscillation divided in East and West. It uses a visual programming language named MaxMsp to compose the signals, written in C and C++.
